Taza is a true bean-to-bar chocolate maker located in Somerville, Massachusetts, and is the only maker of 100% stone ground chocolate in the United States. Taza sources organically grown cacao beans directly from small farming cooperatives ensuring those farmers receive more than fair trade prices for their high quality cacao. Taza is uniquely positioned as one of the only independently owned, socially and environmentally responsible chocolate makers in the country.

History

In Chiapas and Oaxaca, Mexico small growing cooperatives roast and mill organic, farm-grown cacao beans in small batches using unique stone grinders called molinos. They also eat five times as much of it as we do. (We suspect this is because it tastes so good.) Needless to say, our globetrotting founder, on a relentless search for the perfect chocolate, was intrigued.

Soon thereafter, he set out to bring a few molinos back to Somerville (not a simple endeavor). He also developed a working relationship with the chocolateros de Oaxaca.

The result is minimally-processed, locally-produced chocolate that preserves the true flavor of the cacao bean. … And gives Alex a great excuse to visit his friends in Mexico several times a year.
